Indio: Harry Griffith Killed in Chain-Reaction Semi Crash

Posted on Mar 09, 2012

Shortly before 8:00 a.m. this morning, 53-year-old Harry Griffith was killed in a chain-reaction semi crash in Indio. The crash was triggered when 50-year-old Singh Jaswinder suddenly stopped his semi truck in an eastbound lane of the 10 Freeway near Monroe Street, causing 52-year-old Howard Sands to swerve to avoid a collision. Sands rear-ended Jaswinder’s truck as he veered to the left and proceeded to strike a 2011 Dodge, the impact killing the driver, 53-year-old Harry Griffith. The trucker also collided with a 2008 Jaguar and a 2006 Toyota, the impact injuring the occupant of the latter vehicle, a 61-year-old man from Palm Springs. Paramedics transported the man and Sands to the hospital to receive treatment for moderate injuries. Freeway lanes were closed for more than two hours while authorities investigated.

“The investigation of a fatal accident can take several weeks to complete,” explained a Riverside truck accident lawyer, “which can be frustrating for family members attempting to ascertain what happened to their loved one.”

Indio accounted for 3 of the 172 fatalities and 226 of the 10,963 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in traffic accidents in Riverside County in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. That year, large trucks were involved in 14 of the fatal and 297 of the injury crashes that occurred in the county.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Harry Griffith, the man who was killed in the collision in Indio this morning. We would also like to wish a full recovery to Howard Sands and the vehicle occupant from Palm Springs.
