Laguna Woods: Jose Lopez Killed When Vehicle Struck Lawnmower
Posted on Oct 31, 2012
Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 58-year-old Jose Lopez, of Santa Ana, was killed when a vehicle struck the lawnmower he was riding in Laguna Woods. The 86-year-old motorist rear-ended Lopez as he traveled southbound on Avenida Sevilla near El Toro Road, in what investigators believe was an attempt to navigate the lawnmower around a car parked on the street. Upon impact, Lopez was ejected from the machine. Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital, where he was declared dead. Authorities are investigating the accident.
“When a collision results in a fatality, the family of the victim may pursue a wrongful death claim against the negligent driver in order to obtain compensation for their loss,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis.
Laguna Woods accounted for none of the 106 fatalities and 37 of the 19,043 injuries suffered in traffic-related accidents that occurred in Orange County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. That year, California’s incidence of traffic fatalities decreased 11.9 percent to 2,715, the lowest level since the federal government began recording such information in 1975.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Jose Lopez, the man killed when the vehicle struck the lawnmower on which he was riding.
