Lancaster: Pastor Manard Giles Jr. Killed, Lennard A. Wilds and Matty Ferguson Seriously Injured in Crash with Wrong-Way Driver

Posted on Jun 24, 2013

Shortly before dawn on Saturday, June 22, 77-year-old pastor Manard Giles Jr. was killed and 47-year-old Lennard A. Wilds and Matty Ferguson, both passengers in Giles’ 2006 Chrysler 300, were seriously injured in a crash with a wrong-way driver in Lancaster. While traveling southbound in the northbound lane of the 14 Freeway in a 2006 Toyota truck, 38-year-old Bradford E. Pate collided head on with Giles near Escondido Canyon Road. Giles died at the scene. Critically injured, Wilds and Ferguson were transported to hospitals, where Ferguson was placed on life support. Pate suffered major trauma and was also taken to a hospital. Authorities subsequently arrested him on suspicion of DUI causing injury.

“When a driver seriously or fatally harms others while violating traffic safety laws, he or she may be held liable for the expenses associated with their recoveries or their families’ losses,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.

In 2010, 1,051 people were killed or injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Lancaster, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The OTS compares the accident data of cities with populations of a similar size, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings, with 1st place considered the worst. That year, Lancaster ranked 4th out of 53 cities for traffic safety. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 62 of the collisions that resulted or injury or death in the city.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Manard Giles Jr., the pastor who was killed in the crash with the wrong-way driver. We would also like to wish a full recovery to Lennard A. Wilds and Matty Ferguson, the passengers who were seriously injured.
