Mission Viejo Man Killed in 5 Freeway Drunk Driving Accident

A 58-year-old man from Mission Viejo lost his life when he was struck by a drunk driver on the 5 Freeway.  
 
Ronald Payne was driving north on I-5 at about 2 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, December 1.  He was using his 2001 Lexus to pull a small boat on a trailer.  While he was driving, the boat slid off the trailer and went into the next lane.  Payne parked his vehicle on the right shoulder and went to retrieve the boat.
 
As he crossed the freeway, Payne was struck repeatedly by the driver of a 2007 Ford.  According to CHP officials, the driver of the Ford was intoxicated and speeding at the time of the Orange County car crash.

 Payne was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
The driver of the Ford sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony manslaughter.
