Orange County: Hit-and-Run Driver Who Critically Injured Ava O’Conner Arrested

Last Monday evening, police arrested 41-year-old Sarwat Syed, the hit-and-run driver responsible for the crash that critically injured 4-year-old Ava O’Conner in Orange County on June 20^th. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway near Laguna Canyon Road when Syed’s Yukon Denali collided with the vehicle in which O’Conner was riding, the impact sending it off the roadway. The girl was transported to a local hospital, where she underwent a nine-hour operation. She is still recovering from her injuries. Children aged 14 years and younger accounted for 179,000 of the 2,217,000 people injured in traffic accidents involving motor vehicles that occurred throughout the United States in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That year, such accidents claimed the lives of 33,808 people, 1,314 of whom were children. In this country, traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children aged 3 to 14.
