Riverside: Leesa Lyon Injured While Shielding Daughter from Attacking Pit Bulls

Posted on May 16, 2012

At about 10:20 p.m. on Monday, May 14th, Riverside resident Leesa Lyon was injured while shielding her daughter from attacking pit bulls. While returning home to the Corona Pointe Apartments in the 3900 block of Pierce Street, the three dogs charged at Lyon and her daughter. She quickly created a human barrier between the aggressive dogs and her daughter, urging her to run to their car while sustaining several bites to her lower body. Once inside the vehicle, her daughter contacted the authorities, and police and Animal Services officers responded to the scene. Lyon received medical attention at a hospital for the bites.  The pit bulls—all unlicensed and unvaccinated—will be kept at an animal shelter until a dangerous-dog hearing can be held.

“When dogs attack and cause harm to others, the owner may be held liable for the victims’ injury-related expenses,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis.

In California, the owner of a dog that bites and injures others who are on public property or legally on private property may be obligated to compensate the victims for any damage or loss arising from the attack, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness, according to California Civil Code Section 3342

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to Leesa Lyon, the woman who was bitten while shielding her daughter from attacking pit bulls.
