Santa Ana: Bicyclist Alfonso Franco Killed in Crash

Shortly before 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2014, 52-year-old bicyclist Alfonso Franco was killed in a crash in Santa Ana, reported the Orange County Register. A motorist traveling westbound in the 2100 block of West 17th Street struck Franco as he crossed from the south to the north side of the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver is cooperating with authorities as they investigate the accident.
Throughout Orange County, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 13 bicyclists and caused injury to another 1,313 in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. One of the fatal accidents occurred in Santa Ana, where 160 cyclists were injured that year. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Santa Ana 4th out of 13 cities for its incidence of fatal and injury bicycle accidents; 1st place is considered the worst.
