    Santa Ana Cyclist killed in Newport Beach bicycle accident

    Newport Beach police are investigating an accident that left cyclist dead. It is the third fatal bicycle-car accident in Newport Beach in the last year.
     
    The accident occurred at 7:47 a.m. on Thursday, July 15 at Spyglass Hill Road at Harbor Ridge Drive. The cyclist was traveling at about 30 mph when a white Chevrolet stake bed gardening truck pulled in front of him,
     
    The cyclist, Michael William Nine, of Santa Ana, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hoag Hospital. 
     
    The crash remains under investigation.
     
    The crash is third fatal bicyclist accident in Newport Beach in the past year. On July 23, 2009, 43-year-old Darryl Benefiel was killed on Ridge Park Road when his bicycle was struck by a car turning onto Tesoro. That death prompted the creation of the Newport Beach Task Force on Cycling Safety. In December, another Newport Beach cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident at Jamboree and Ford roads.
