Santa Ana: Drunk Driver Struck, Killed 2-Year-Old Boy
Posted on Nov 10, 2011
At about 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9th, a drunk driver struck and killed a 2-year-old boy in Santa Ana. The accident occurred at the intersection of Fifth Street and North Bewley Street when 23-year-old Angel Alberto Cruz Perez exited the parking lot of a nearby bar at a high rate of speed and hit a mother crossing the street carrying her 1-year-old daughter and holding the hand of her 2-year-old son, the impact knocking the mother and girl to the ground and pulling the boy under the SUV. The family was transported to a local hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead and the mother and girl received treatment for their injuries. Perez fled the scene of the accident but was later apprehended at a nearby mobile home park, where police arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, felony DUI, and driving without a license, explains an Orange County injury lawyer.
Santa Ana accounted for 7 of the 41 fatalities and 160 of the 914 injuries suffered by pedestrians in Orange County in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident statistics of cities with similar populations, ranking those with the poorest records the highest, with 1st place being the worst. That year, Santa Ana ranked 1st out of 13 cities for fatal and injury child pedestrian accidents.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of the 2-year-old boy who was struck and killed by the drunk driver last night. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the mother and 1-year-old girl who were injured.
The Orange County Register originally reported this Santa Ana accident.
