Ten Injured In San Clemente Pile-Up Crash

Ten people were injured in a San Clemente car wreck when multiple vehicles crashed on the northbound I-5. Police are blaming the accident on driver distraction.
 
The three vehicle accident occurred on the northbound 5 Freeway near the Avenida Pico exit in San Clemente on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 15. Police believe that the accident occurred when the driver of a Dodge traveling north in the fast lane rear-ended the Nissan traveling ahead of him. The force of the crash pushed the Nissan into an adjacent lane where it struck a Mercedes-Benz.  

There were six occupants in the Nissan; all six, including a 26-year-old male driver, were taken to Mission Hospital. Two of the occupants sustained major injuries, two suffered moderate injuries, and two suffered minor injuries.
 
There were four people in the Dodge.  All four were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of minor injuries.
 
The driver of the Mercedes was not injured.
 
The crash is still under investigation, but police believe that the Orange County accident was caused by a distracted driver. The drivers of the Nissan and the Mercedes had slowed down for traffic, but the driver of the Dodge did not.  
 
Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be contributing factors.
