Disc Injury Explained Simply | Orange County Accident Lawyer
Do you want to understand in simple terms what disc injury and herniation really are? Review this video explained by an Orange County accident lawyer.
Hi, this is Jim Ballidis. I’m a California personal injury attorney, and I’m in our Orange County office today. And we are here to answer the question, what is a disc injury?
I want you to think of a disc as a jelly donut. Now obviously in your human body it’s much harder and more resilient than a jelly donut but the analogy is the same. If you compress your disc because of an accident, because of an injury, a serious whiplash or even falling down, you can cause the outer portion of that disc to be bulged, much like you would squeeze down or compress a jelly donut, the outside edge would be pushed out, and that can cause pain, and it can also impinge or push upon nerves and other muscle structures that cause pain. It’s very important that you get treatment immediately for this kind of condition. But there is a worsening condition as well, and that is if you’ve compressed the disc so much that you push -- tear the side of the walls of the disc and you actually extrude or push out the jelly from the donut and that’s called a herniation, and a disc herniation can be quite serious because it actually is putting objects out in to the spinal canal which can cause even more injury.
It’s important that you get to a medical doctor immediately that understands disc injury. Your personal injury attorney can help you with that referral or you can speak to your general practitioner. The quicker that you see an expert that understands disc injury, the more likely it will be that you will have a good resolution of your symptoms. I’m Jim Ballidis, a California personal injury attorney, and if you have been involved in an accident or an injury and somebody has told you you have a disc injury, please call me.
